Hey! This is a newsletter about what I currently find interesting in the world.
Interesting Reads - links from around the web
Netflix Is Being Accused of “False Advertising,” Racism Over its Personalized Imagery - We all know that Netflix loves to change up the images for shows and movies, but I have noticed lately that some don’t necessarily reflect or showcase the main characters.
TikTok Is Cringey and That's Fine - Tiktok might be the only social platform where you can view anyone and everyone’s content and not feel terrible about yourself.
Los Angeles will wipe out nearly $90 million worth of debt incurred by juvenile offenders - The criminal justice system in this country is so messed up.
I Sent Fake Versions of Myself On TV and Everyone Fell for It - The lack of due diligence is frightening here.
YouTube invests $20 million in educational videos, giving advertisers more safe places for ads - YouTube is a dumpster fire, but here’s something positive coming out of it. I spent so much time learning math, science, and history from YouTubers (shoutout to Crash Course and all the math channels out there), so I’m super excited to see more educational content on the platform.
Investigating Implausible Bloomberg Supermicro Stories - This one is a long and more or less technical read, so make sure you’ve put some time aside to read it in full.
What the Hell Happened to Darius Miles? - I’m not a big sports person, but this was a very good article to read. A tale of fame, fortune, and loss in the span two decades.
Bitcoin Block Chain Now Searchable with DuckDuckGo - Users could previously see wallet balance information, but now they can access information about individual transactions, too. I’m super interested in seeing how search engines/platforms will try to reduce the friction between web 2.0 and 3.0.
Scooters are taking cars off the road, a survey says - Anyone who’s been following scooters, including myself, has been waiting for early results like these. Now, if we could only start banning cars from cities… :)
In My Ears - podcast episodes I enjoyed
#011 - How Bill Bishop cut a path from the Tiananmen Square Massacre to the inboxes of America’s power brokers [Substack]
This was very interesting to listen to. In case you don’t know who Bill is, he worked on the early version of Marketwatch.com for about seven years. Here, he talks about how he started taking Chinese more seriously, found himself interning during the Chinese student protests that would lead to the Tiananmen Square Massacre, and on building the biggest newsletter about China.212: Mike Maples, Jr. Silicon Valley Venture Capital Legend [Legends and Losers]
I really love fly on the wall podcasts. I just started listening to Legends and Losers recently, but it’s definitely good so far. Big themes in this episode are networks, the stock market, and innovation.
Tracks - song recommendations
